What is the KonMari Method®

It’s about choosing joy

Most tidying methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach which dooms you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever.

The KonMari Method® encourages tidying by category not location. Beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items) and sentimental items. Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy, thanking them for their service and letting go with gratitude.

Most are drawn to this philosophy not only due to its effectiveness, but also because it places great importance on being mindful, introspective and forward-looking.

Meet Marie Kondo

Marie Kondo is a tidying expert, bestselling author, star of Netflix's hit shows, "Tidying Up With Marie Kondo” and “Sparking Joy”, and founder of KonMari Media, Inc.

Life truly begins after you have put your house in order — M. Kondo

Did you notice? “KonMari” is derived from Marie’s name.

Marie on sentimental items…

“It is not our memories but the person we have become because of those past experiences that we should treasure. This is the lesson these keepsakes teach us when we sort them. The space in which we live should be for the person we are becoming now, not for the person we were in the past.” — M. Kondo

..on honing your joy check…

"The process of assessing how you feel about the things you own, identifying those that have fulfilled their purpose, expressing your gratitude, and bidding them farewell, is really about examining your inner self, a rite of passage to a new life." — M. Kondo

..on envisioning your ideal life…

"Now imagine yourself living in a space that contains only things that spark joy. Isn't this the lifestyle you dream of?" — M. Kondo
